Biography

Marc Canellas is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Cognitive Engineering Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. His PhD is in aerospace engineering but his training is in cognitive engineering: the analysis, design, and evaluation of complex, safety-critical systems that are dependent on human-technology interaction to be successful. His research focuses on how to design decision support systems for warfighters through computational and human-subject studies of decision making with incomplete information.

With an interest in law and policy, he has published work showing how cognitive engineering can provide the foundation for regulating autonomous weapons systems such that humans retain the ability to make necessary legal judgments. He also recently completed his year-long term as the President of the Graduate Student Body at Georgia Tech – representing over 9,500 graduate students and administering a budget of $5.1M.

He has been awarded several honors for his research (e.g. Sam Nunn Security Fellowship and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship) and for his contributions to his universities (e.g. Georgia Tech Campus Life Scholarship and the University of Missouri Unsung Hero Award).

Recent Projects

ONR - Overall Decision Making Process Simulation

Decision makers are consistently asked to make decisions about the course of action required to achieve mission success regardless of the time pressure and the quantity and quality of information available. To be successful, they will adapt their decision strategies to the environment and even use heuristics, simple rules that use little information and can be processed quickly. To support these decision makers, we are designing proactive decision support systems that support adaptive decision making along a range analytic and heuristic strategies.
